Lesson 83 – How To Get “Unstuck” With 3 Qigong Exercises (Replay of Live Lesson)

This video shows you a gentle 20-minute Qigong routine to become “unstuck” with 3 Qigong exercises. If you physically feel as though you have stagnant Qi which can manifest as pain, cramp, congestion or digestive problems or mentally like you are “stuck in the mud”, depressed, anxious or unmotivated, why not try these three Qigong exercises to help relieve this feeling of stagnation?

How To Get “Unstuck” With 3 Qigong Exercises – Introduction

In our modern day world with our often hectic schedules of often trying to fit too many things into our busy schedules, it is common for us to feel “stuck”. This stuck feeling can manifest either:

  1. Physically – by way of pain, clots, cramps, headaches, premenstrual tension, digestive issues or sinus/chest congestion;
  2. Mentally/Emotionally – by way of brain fog, anger, feeling unmotivated, depressed, anxious or simply “stuck in the mud”.

This stuck feeling in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is described as stagnant Qi and can be caused by many factors, for example:

  • poor diet;
  • overeating;
  • too much screen time;
  • lack of physical movement;
  • stress;
  • excess alcohol;
  • toxins in the environment.

Three of the main systems in the body which are particularly subject to this feeling of stagnant Qi or “stuckness” are:

  • The Lung system – which when not functioning optimally can lead to a build-up of Qi in the chest manifesting as breathing difficulties, chest or sinus congestion.
  • The Spleen system – which when overcome by excess can lead to a heavy, bloated, “stuck in the mud” feeling, especially in the abdominal area as Spleen governs the whole of digestion in TCM terms.
  • The Liver system – which is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi so is often affected.

How To Get “Unstuck” With 3 Qigong Exercises – Method

  1. Begin by sitting or standing and performing a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Release stagnant or stuck Qi in the chest and lungs with a chest opening exercise.
  3. Raising Up A Single Hand to release stuck Qi in the digestive and Spleen systems.
  4. “Polish the Table Top” and “Side Stretch” to relieve stuck Qi in the Liver system.
  5. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Qigong Video Interview-“Create More Energy In Your Life”

This is a replay of a Qigong podcast interview “Create More Energy In Your Life” conducted by my Chinese medicine practitioner colleague, Lucy Townsley, who started her own podcast on women’s health in January 2022. She has interviewed a number of fascinating, knowledgable experts about many health matters affecting women and I was fortunate enough to be invited to speak on her podcast.

In this Qigong video interview I emphasise my passion and belief in equipping my clients and Qigong students with tools which they can use to manage their health for themselves. These “Qigong tools” encourage you to take responsibility for your own health, giving you confidence and empowering you so that you no longer feel helpless when it comes to your state of health.

Main Points

Qi Gong is a different type of exercise where you don’t force your body to move. You use your breath and mind to lead the body’s movement. This can be helpful if you suffer from pain.

Breathing is a huge part of Qigong. When you breathe in deeply and feel the belly expand out. The diaphragm will then move in different directions, sideways, forwards, backward, up, and down. The benefits of breathing are huge… Breathing brings energy to your body called Qi in Chinese Medicine. Breathing in and out of the nose helps calm the mind and helps with anxiety.

Do you have a place in your body that is painful? If so, I explain how breathing into the area can help ease your pain.

In this podcast, it’s made very clear that anyone can learn how to turn their health around. You can be in control of your life. Once you start on this journey it helps ease any worry of future health concerns.

The most important takeaway for you from my Qigong video interview is to understand that change can happen by allowing rather than forcing things unnaturally. Many Qigong students put in too much effort rather than simply enjoying and observing their practice. 😊

Qigong Healing Sound For Heart and Heart Meditation – Introduction

In the northern hemisphere we will soon be coming into the season of Summer which is the associated season of the Heart system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This is the best time of year to focus on Heart nourishing activities such as Qigong, in order to allow our Heart system to function optimally (more below).

[If you live in the southern hemisphere and are currently moving into winter then you can still practice this routine but you might also want to try this one for the Kidney system, the organ system associated with winter.]

Our Heart system is known in TCM as the SOVEREIGN RULER OR EMPEROR of the other organ systems. It governs or oversees all other activities in the body and mind. Its functions include:

  • Control of blood circulation/blood vessels/blood pressure/pulse rate;
  • Opening into the tongue and being responsible for clear speech;
  • Being able to feel and express the emotions of joy and excitement;
  • Manifesting in the facial complexion;
  • Housing the mind and therefore influencing peaceful sleep, memory and keeping your mind calm, clear and focused.

An imbalance in the Heart system can result in symptoms such as:

  • Blood circulation problems, heart issues, high blood pressure, palpitations;
  • A red face or poor complexion;
  • Insomnia, dream disturbed sleep and night sweats;
  • Poor memory (the inability to recall names which are on the tip of your tongue);
  • A scattered mind which is restless, uneasy or confused;
  • Anxiety and/or depression;
  • Overexcitement and nervous laughter;
  • Panic attacks.

The good news is that Qigong practice can help you transition smoothly from Springtime into Summer. In the video lesson on this page you can:

  1. Use one of the Six Healing Sounds to help discharge (get rid of) waste or sick Qi from the Heart system.
  2. Listen to a soothing Qigong Heart meditation based on the longer Inner Smile Meditation method in order to open your Heart and calm your mind.

Qigong Healing Sound For Heart and Heart Meditation – Method

  1. Adopt a Qigong standing or sitting posture.

  2. Settle into your practice with a few Abdominal Breaths.

  3. Combine your movement, breath, mind and healing sound for the Heart (Ke) in order to discharge waste or sick Qi from the Heart system. Use multiples of 6 repetitions for this discharging exercise until you begin to feel lighter and more open in the heart area.

  4. Follow along with my guided meditation to open the Heart and calm the mind using your inner smile.

  5. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Introduction

In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the small intestine system is paired with the heart system and related to the season of summer. This is the time when these systems are the most active and require the most care.

On the physical and mental/emotional level, the small intestine sorts pure from impure and clear from turbid. This means that our small intestine extracts nutrients from food and allows waste material to pass into the large intestine to be expelled from the body. Very interestingly, on a mental level, the small intestine allows us to clearly discern, make choices and decisions. It allows us to discriminate between clear and turbid thoughts, distinguish right from wrong and make clear judgements.

A healthy small intestine system manifests as healthy digestion, judgement and decision making. However, in our modern-day world full of too much information, the small intestine system can easily become overwhelmed leading to digestive/immunity problems and a confused/indecisive/foggy mind.

A balanced diet and lifestyle (sleep, exercise, meditation) will promote a healthy small intestine system, as will some Qigong practice! In this video, we use two specific exercises to help create the ideal conditions for open and smooth flow of Qi through the small intestine channel which leads internally to the heart and the small intestine. The result, with regular practice, is that we will become better able to separate pure from impure on both a physical (digestive) and mental (thoughts) level.

15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Method

  1. Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Upper back stretch with elbow flexing.
  3. Forward bend and chest opening movement.
  4. Finish with a few abdominal breaths.

15 Minute Qigong Routine For Restless Legs and Leg Circulation – Introduction

If we experience issues with the circulation in our legs not being as open and free flowing as it could be then the following symptoms and conditions may arise:

  • Restless legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Cold feet and toes
  • Heavy legs
  • Tired legs

Restless legs, in particular, is a common and irritating problem for many people. It can be related to iron deficiency, certain medications, varicose veins, nerve disorders, hypothyroid, diabetes, pregnancy, obesity and excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee and smoking.

Restless legs can be associated with other conditions such as fibromyalgia, sleep apnea/sleep problems, thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

The desire to move and the tingling, creeping sensations in the legs are, in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are signs of a lack of smooth flow of Qi and blood in the legs.

The objective of managing restless leg syndrome is to improve blood and Qi flow through the legs. Qigong can help you with this alongside other options which are mentioned below.

15 Minute Qigong Routine For Restless Legs And Leg Circulation – Method

  1. Begin standing (or standing for long periods is not available to you right now).
  2. Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  3. Tap and massage around the hips.
  4. Tap and massage up and down the outside and inside of the legs.
  5. Lift alternating legs.
  6. Lift and circle hips out, then in, alternating legs.
  7. Rub the knees, perform a few small knee circles then sit down, bending the knees and keeping the heels on the floor.
  8. Circle the ankles.
  9. Lift the toes then replace one at a time.
  10. Shake out the legs.
  11. Finish the routine with abdominal breathing.

Additional Management Options

The following additional avenues are worth exploring if you haven’t already considered them:

  1. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be extremely helpful if you suffer from restless legs, tired legs or any circulatory issues related to the legs.
  2. Supplement with iron and/or magnesium if you are deficient.
  3. Take regular exercise to improve general circulation.
  4. Adopt a low sugar diet.
