Can Qigong Make You Tired? – Introduction
Qigong as an exercise can leave us feeling both relaxed and energised at the same time. It is different from conventional exercise in that we often gain energy from Qigong practice, rather than using it up. However, my students have often commented that they can feel tired after Qigong practice. Why is this? I’ve noticed that 3 main factors contribute to post Qigong tiredness:
Your individual energy levels. Pay attention to how you feel on any particular day and whether or not you are exhausted from certain medications and treatments you may have received, e.g. chemotherapy.
The Qigong exercises you choose to practice. More strenuous Qigong will naturally require more energy (Qi) than more gentle, meditative practice.
Stimulation of healing as a result of Qigong takes energy that comes from you. If you do too much of this, you will naturally feel more tired as your body works to bring itself back into a healthy balance.
Objective: To show you a choice of example Qigong methods requiring varying degrees of effort.
Result: You will know how to discern and choose the most appropriate Qigong exercises for you which will best suit your energy levels on any particular day.

15 Minute Qigong Routine For Beginners – Introduction
For those of you who are new to Qigong you may not know that this ancient practice is a combination of simple movements, breathing and mind focus to create the conditions whereby your Qi can flow more openly within your body and mind. When this happens your body begins to “regulate” itself and comes back into a healthy balance.
In this 15 minute Qigong routine for beginners, you will learn how to enjoy Qigong, not taking it too seriously, not striving for perfection (which creates stress!) and instead, enjoying the smooth and easy flow of your movement and breath.
The objective of this routine is to:
Energise your body;
Calm mind chatter;
Improve your sleep;
Aid weight loss.
The result of this practice is that you will feel both relaxed and invigorated at the same time. It is the perfect method to perform in the morning as a kick start to your day but can be practiced anytime.
15 Minute Qigong Routine For Beginners – Method
Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
Perform a few arm circles to circulate and encourage the Qi to move down into Dan Tian (in the lower abdomen) and your legs/feet.
Repeat a few rounds of the upper back and shoulder stretch.
Perform a variation of “Swimming Dragon” either from a sitting (arm and head movements only) or standing position (horse stance of regular Qigong stance).
Shake out any remaining tension by vibrating the body for a minute or so.

15 Minute Qigong Routine For Restless Legs and Leg Circulation – Introduction
If we experience issues with the circulation in our legs not being as open and free flowing as it could be then the following symptoms and conditions may arise:
Restless legs
Varicose veins
Cold feet and toes
Heavy legs
Tired legs
Restless legs, in particular, is a common and irritating problem for many people. It can be related to iron deficiency, certain medications, varicose veins, nerve disorders, hypothyroid, diabetes, pregnancy, obesity and excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee and smoking.
Restless legs can be associated with other conditions such as fibromyalgia, sleep apnea/sleep problems, thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
The desire to move and the tingling, creeping sensations in the legs are, in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are signs of a lack of smooth flow of Qi and blood in the legs.
The objective of managing restless leg syndrome is to improve blood and Qi flow through the legs. Qigong can help you with this alongside other options which are mentioned below.
15 Minute Qigong Routine For Restless Legs And Leg Circulation – Method

Supplement with iron and/or magnesium if you are deficient.
Take regular exercise to improve general circulation.

Qigong Exercises for Stability, Mobility and Balance – Introduction
The theme of the exercises in this video is “stabilise to mobilise“. When our joints are stable we can then move from a position of strength with confidence that we are not going to cause ourselves injury. When our balance is stablised we feel much more secure in our Qigong movements and can gain maximum benefit from them. Improved balance is also important for seniors as this will reduce the likelihood of falling in day to day life which can have serious consequences, especially for people with osteoporosis.
In this video you will learn how to use purposeful movement combined with breath awareness and mind focus (the three elements of Qigong) in order to:
Promote free flow of Qi and blood through the joints and muscles;
Prevent injury from overstraining the body;
Improve balance for fall prevention.
Qigong Exercises for Stability, Mobility and Balance – Method
Adopt the Qigong stance and begin with a few abdominal breaths.
Loosen the shoulder joints with shoulder circles, forwards and backwards, using the breath and thinking deep inside the shoulder joint as you do this.
Bring hands into a prayer position then lift them to the level of the forehead. Bring the elbows together to meet as you exhale, stretching the trapezius muscles (the ones on the tops of the shoulders which often become very tight through poor posture and when we are under pressure). Inhale, relax and move the elbows apart. Repeat a few times.
Lift the arms to shoulder level, reach forward to move the shoulder blades apart from each other, pull the arms back into the sockets, drawing the shoulder blades towards each other, creating a “valley” between them in the upper back.
From your Qigong stance, rock forwards and backwards, bringing your awareness into the soles of your feet, in particular the ball of your foot behind the big toe and the centre of the heel.
Bend your knees, lift alternating heels a few times, then both heels off the ground together in order to practice your balance.
Finish your practice with a few abdominal breaths, taking time to observe the state of your body and mind.

Qigong for Balance and Ears – Introduction
If you have been enjoying these classes during the last couple of months and you’d like to donate something by way of a thank you, I’ll be giving 50% of donations to the ICU nurses in my local hospital. Click here to donate.
Introduction To Qigong for Balance & Ears
In this video you can follow along with some Qigong for balance and ears. Having good balance is important in order to prevent falls, especially in seniors where the consequences of a broken bone can be very serious. Athletic performance can also be enhanced with improved balance. Many sports require finely tuned balance and timing. Even simple walking or cycling requires good balance.
Many of us know that the ears are closely connected with our sense of balance. Ear infections or conditions such as vertigo, Meniere’s disease and labyrinthitis can have a serious detrimental impact upon our balance. The video on this page also shows you some massage to stimulate the acupuncture points around your ears to improve the flow of Qi to this area. Also, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ears are the sense organ associated with the Kidney system so a simple lower back/kidney massage is also demonstrated for you to follow along with.
Qigong for Balance and Ears – Method
1. Adopt the Qigong sitting or standing posture (more here).
2. Begin with Abdominal Breathing to get into the “Qigong State” of calm and relaxation (more details here).
3. As you breathe, identify the areas where you are holding tension by mentally scanning from your head to your toes. Exhale and in your mind’s eye visualise relaxing and expanding the area which is tense.
4. Build leg strength to give yourself confidence around your balance, knowing that your legs can safely and securely support you. To do this adopt a horse stance (more here) and practice an exercise such as the “Circles” exercise to encourage Qi circulation the four directions (see more detail here).
5. Follow along with ear massage and ear pulling to stimulate the acupuressure points around the ears.
6. Massage the lower back/kidney area to stimulate and invigorate the flow of Qi in the kidney system.
In order to develop better balance you can find a few minutes to practice any of the above Qigong for balance and ears during the course of your day. Remember, if you are not confident with your balance, to move slowly and deliberately, making sure your footing is firm and you feel grounded before moving your body.
