Qigong For Before, During and After Travel – Introduction

Travelling for most of us is exciting but can also be challenging in a number of ways:

  1. We may be subjected to a change in time zone or be travelling during the night which can disrupt our sleep pattern.
  2. We may have to stand (in a queue) or sit for extended periods of time which can lead to aches, pains and stiffness as our Qi, blood and lymph do not flow as freely as when we are moving around.
  3. Our digestive system may be upset due to the consumption of different food from our usual diet or a long period of sitting which can restrict the organs in the abdominal cavity.
  4. Mentally we may feel anxiety, frustration or fear due to e.g. being late for a flight, ferry or train, cancellations of flights, traffic jams, fear of flying.

All of these challenges can lead to:

  1. Restricted circulation of Qi, blood and lymph which can cause aches, pains, stiffness or fluid retention in the limbs, back, shoulders and neck.
  2. Digestive stagnation leading to constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, bloating or indigestion.
  3. Mental and emotional stress leading to anxiety, fatigue and lack of sleep.

Qigong for Before, During and After Travel. How Can It Help?

Fortunately, Qigong can be extremely helpful before, during and after your journey. Qigong methods can help you:

  • Create the conditions for open and free flow of Qi, Blood and lymph, thereby reducing stiffness, aches and pains.
  • Stimulate Qi flow through the digestive system in order to harmonise digestion and avoid discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Calm your mind to reduce emotional and mental stress and improve your sleep.

The routine described below and shown in the video replay on this page will help to prepare your body and mind before travel, give you some tips to use during your journey and show you how to recover as quickly as possible from your journey once it is complete.

It goes without saying that for any travel you’d be advised to stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol and get plenty of sleep beforehand.

15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Introduction

In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the small intestine system is paired with the heart system and related to the season of summer. This is the time when these systems are the most active and require the most care.

On the physical and mental/emotional level, the small intestine sorts pure from impure and clear from turbid. This means that our small intestine extracts nutrients from food and allows waste material to pass into the large intestine to be expelled from the body. Very interestingly, on a mental level, the small intestine allows us to clearly discern, make choices and decisions. It allows us to discriminate between clear and turbid thoughts, distinguish right from wrong and make clear judgements.

A healthy small intestine system manifests as healthy digestion, judgement and decision making. However, in our modern-day world full of too much information, the small intestine system can easily become overwhelmed leading to digestive/immunity problems and a confused/indecisive/foggy mind.

A balanced diet and lifestyle (sleep, exercise, meditation) will promote a healthy small intestine system, as will some Qigong practice! In this video, we use two specific exercises to help create the ideal conditions for open and smooth flow of Qi through the small intestine channel which leads internally to the heart and the small intestine. The result, with regular practice, is that we will become better able to separate pure from impure on both a physical (digestive) and mental (thoughts) level.

15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Method

  1. Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Upper back stretch with elbow flexing.
  3. Forward bend and chest opening movement.
  4. Finish with a few abdominal breaths.

Lesson 61 – Qigong For Heart Health (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

Qigong For Heart Health – Introduction

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) terms, our Heart system governs our circulation, blood pressure and pulse, influences speech, “houses” the mind to keep it calm and clear, allows us to get off to sleep at night and plays a role in our memory function.

A well nourished Heart manifests in healthy circulation and heart function, healthy blood pressure, a calm mind, and peaceful sleep.

An imbalance in our Heart system can result in blood circulation problems, palpitations, high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia and poor memory.

The Qigong method I teach here shows you one of the 8 Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) movements called “Shaking Head & Wagging Tail” which helps descend Fire (Heat) from the Heart system which commonly causes the symptoms above, down through the coccyx and perineum.

You’ll learn three different levels of this method, depending on which level of movement is available to you with the result that you will have one of these levels which you can incorporate into your Qigong routine or perform as a standalone Qigong exercise.

Qigong For Heart Health – Method

  1. Adopt the correct sitting posture.
  2. Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  3. Level 1: Perform Shaking Head and Wagging Tail sitting with legs hip-width apart. This is suitable for wheelchair users and anyone with limited movement and flexibility.
  4. Level 2: Perform Shaking Head and Wagging Tail sitting with legs wide apart. This creates more of a stretch in the groin and down the inside of the legs but is still gentle on the back.
  5. Level 3: Perform Shaking Head and Wagging Tail from the classical horse stance position.
  6. Finish with a few abdominal breaths.

Lesson 41 – The Three Swings and Knocking On The Gate Of Life Qigong (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

This is a replay of a live session showing you a Qigong routine for Spring, taught by myself, Dr. Janice Tucker. I have been teaching Qigong for two decades and am the founder of the Space To Relax Programme of Qigong video lessons. I’m also a practitioner of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Three Swings and Knocking On The Gate Of Life Qigong – Intro

The Three Swings (Knocking on the Door of Life) is an ancient Qigong practice that encourages the free flow of Qi around the whole of the physical body, stimulating the acupuncture point, Mingmen, known as the “Gate of Life”.

This exercise will help create the conditions for your Qi (energy) flow to unblock and flow in an unimpeded way. When this happens it revitalises your fundamental physical energy reserves. When you physically feel more energised, this has a knock-on effect on your emotions which can then become more balanced too.

Focus on:

1. Complete relaxation of your arms;

2. Allowing your waist and hips to lead the movement.

Method

  1. Begin by adopting the correct Qigong standing posture and performing a few abdominal breaths.
  2. Perform a few circles exercises to encourage the movement of Qi in the four directions.
  3. Perform the Three Swings in the following order:
    a) Lower abdominal/lower back swing;
    b) Swing to open the sides of the body and massage the abdominal organs (liver, stomach, spleen);
    c) Swing to open and stimulate Qi flow to the lungs, heart and brain (upper part of the body).
  4. Stand on Tiptoes to Rid 1000 diseases.
  5. Close your practice with abdominal breathing and observe how you feel in both your body and mind.

Integrating The Three Swings and Knocking on the Gate of Life Qigong Into Your Day

You can practice any of the movements shown in this video whenever you have 5 minutes. A short daily practice of this method can help to improve you balance in addition to relieving tension in your shoulders or lower back and leaving you feeling energised!

Many other live lesson replays can be found on my blog page so I’d encourage you to take a look at some of them and find methods which you can easily add on to the end of this one. A good example is “Embracing The Tree” which is a lovely practice to perform once you have encouraged dynamic Qi flow with the practice in this video.

Lesson 40 – Comparing Seated Qigong With Seated Meditation (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

Lesson 40 – Comparing Seated Qigong With Seated Meditation (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

Comparing Seated Qigong with Seated Meditation – Intro

When comparing seated Qigong with seated meditation, the main difference is that in seated Qigong you have the option to include MOVEMENT.

Generally speaking, a seated meditation does not include movement (only the movement of the abdomen as you are breathing). Seated meditation can focus on breathing or visualisation so involves two of the elements of Qigong; mind and breath.

Seated Qigong, however, can also include the third element, that of movement. This emphasises the fact that with Qigong we always have a CHOICE as to the structure of our routine. It also illustrates the FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTABILITY of Qigong.

When moving the body during a seated Qigong practice you may want to choose arm or leg movements from previous live lesson replays from me. Alternatively, you can follow along with the routine here in the video which focuses on smooth flowing movements in order to create the conditions for the unimpeded movement of Qi around the body.

Integrating Seated Qigong Into Your Day

You can practice any of the movements shown in this video whenever you have 5 minutes to sit down. Even a short amount of practice can help to relieve tension in your shoulders or lower back and leave you feeling revitalised!

Below are three links to previous live Qigong lesson replays which you could combine with this Qigong practice if you would like to make a longer Qigong routine.

  1. Seated Qigong Exercises
  2. Qigong Awareness Exercises
  3. Qigong for Emotional Balance.

Many other live lesson replays can be found on my blog page so I’d encourage you to take a look at some of them and find methods which you can easily adapt to perform from a seated position.
