Qigong For Resilience – Developing The Skill

Resilience is our ability to face problems and stresses so that we can successfully navigate challenges in life. Think of it as a skill you can develop by using a toolbox of methods to draw on. Examples could be the strategy of talking and asking for help, spending time in nature, meditating, feeling the fear and pushing through it. You can add Qigong to your toolbox as further support in acquiring greater resilience, a quality which we could all benefit from in the current climate!

Qigong For Resilience – Method

  1. Begin by taking a comfortable standing (more on Qigong stance here) or sitting position (more on seated Qigong here).
  2. Settle into your practice by relaxing your body and mind with Abdominal Breathing.
  3. Following along with the “Shooting Vulture” movement, one of the “8 Pieces of Brocade” method which you can find in my Space To Relax Programme of 50 Qigong videos lessons.
  4. Relax the body and twist from side to side to perform the “Knocking on the Gates/Door of Life” method.
  5. “Stand on Tiptoes To Rid the 1000 Diseases” movement which is fabulous for balance too (and another of the “8 Pieces of Brocade”).
  6. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Please watch the following videos I made previously which you can also use to help develop the skill of being more resilient to life’s challenges!

  1. Qigong for Emotional Balance (to calm your mind).
  2. Release Fear With Qigong
  3. Qigong for Energy Protection.
  4. A Grounding Qigong Routine.

Qigong Daily Routine – Introduction

This is a replay of a live session showing you how to select the best Qigong daily routine for yourself. This lesson is for you if you feel overwhelmed with the hundreds of Qigong methods online and do not know how to choose the best ones to practice on a regular basis. I explain how to tune in to your body and mind in order to assess what you need before your practice begins. I also give you some general guidelines for formulating a Qigong routine.

You can decide on how to choose a daily Qigong routine which suits you by firstly taking the time to tune into your abdominal breathing. Then, observe the state of your body and mind, asking yourself whether you’d like to:

  • calm and clear your mind;
  • energise your body if you feel exhausted;
  • relax and stretch out specific areas of your body which you’d like to be more loose and flexible;
  • rid unpleasant physical or emotional feelings.

Qigong Daily Routine – Method

  1. Begin by taking a comfortable standing (more on Qigong stance here) or sitting position (more on seated Qigong here).
  2. Settle into your practice by relaxing your body and mind with Abdominal Breathing.
  3. Observe your physical, mental and emotional state as listed above.
  4. Choose a meditative (mind calming), moving (energising) or discharging waste Qi method as your main Qigong practice for the day.
  5. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths, taking time to observe any changes in the state of your body and mind
  • Always begin and end your practice with abdominal breathing so that you have a clear start and end point to your routine.
  • Next, discharge any stress by vibrating the body or practicing another discharging method (see below links) in order to rid waste Qi and increase your vitality.
  • Choose your main Qigong method, based on your initial observations of your body and mind.
  • Be comfortable and relaxed during your practice. If you do not feel this way then you may need to change your posture, Qigong exercise, etc. until you do feel comfortable.

Please watch the following videos I made previously which you could choose from in order to help you come up with a daily Qigong routine which works for you!

  1. Discharge Waste Qi With Vibration (to discharge waste Qi).
  2. Qigong for Cleansing (to disharge waste Qi)
  3. Qigong for Emotional Balance (to calm your mind).
  4. Ease Physical Discomfort and Pain.
  5. Qigong Recharge Exercises (for exhaustion).
  6. A Simple Qigong Stretch (to stretch the body).

Introduction To Qigong for Present Moment Living

In this video you can follow along with some Qigong for present moment living. Often our minds are not in the present. We can be distracted by thoughts from the past or worrying about the future. The purpose of this Qigong routine is to bring you into the present moment and experience the feeling of being in the now!

Method for Qigong Present Moment Living

Choose a comfortable sitting or standing position for this practice.

1. Begin with Abdominal Breathing. Click here for more details;

2. Combine the movement of the lower abdomen, the breath and the mind for a few breaths.

3. Swimming Dragon Arm Exercise. Follow along with me in the video for a few rounds of this exercise. Once we finish think about where your mind was during the practice; in the past, present or future? Were you distracted by what you had to do later that day (go shopping, cook dinner, do stuff with the kids) or were you fully immersed in the present moment of your practice, with your mind focused on your breath and movement?

Integration into Your Day

You can use Qigong to bring yourself into the present moment anytime you wish. Even if you don’t have time to practice the Swiming Dragon movements, you can always bring your mind to your breathing at any time. The result is that your mind will feel calmer and more relaxed.

Qigong Video Interview-“The Qi Effect”

Qigong Video Interview-“The Qi Effect”

This is a replay of a Qigong video interview conducted by Robert Bowley who put together a Qigong Summit in January 2020. He interviewed one Qigong expert per day for 30 minutes over a period of 21 days. This was a monumental effort on Rob’s behalf in response to the increasing desire to know more about ancient healing systems and how we can bring them into our lives in the modern day. Rob’s intention was to interview experts who could provide solutions to transform your health and build emotional resilience.

I was amongst an esteemed group of Qigong experts so I felt extremely fortunate to be invited to be interviewed by Rob.

In this Qigong video interview I emphasise my passion and belief in equipping my clients and Qigong students with tools which they can use to manage their health for themselves. These “Qigong tools” encourage you to take responsibility for your own health, giving you confidence and empowering you so that you no longer feel helpless when it comes to your state of health.

Main Points

Particular points to note from my Qigong Summit interview are:
1. That Qigong is not about pushing & straining to achieve a goal. Rather, you enter into the practice and allow things to unfold;
2. The ways in which my students have gained huge benefits by practicing Qigong regularly;
3. Why Qigong can help you enjoy better sleep;
4. How you can allow your emotions to flow through you & be processed through your body/mind or expressed in a healthy way. By doing this you can gain peace of mind & happiness in your relationships with others.

The most important takeaway for you from my Qigong video interview is to understand that change can happen by allowing rather than forcing things unnaturally. Many Qigong students put in too much effort rather than simply enjoying and observing their practice. 😊

Qigong For Digestion – Introduction

In this video you can follow along with some Qigong for digestion. This Qigong exercise can help you if you suffer with digestive issues such as colitis, diverticulitis, IBS (see here for a previous video about IBS) and indigestion, amongst other stomach and digestive related problems. Because it communicates with all the other systems in our bodies, when our gut is healthy the rest of our body is more likely to function at its optimum. The sequence is as follows:

1. Begin with Abdominal Breathing to calm the mind and prepare yourself for your practice;

2. Raising Up A Single Hand exercise (which is part of the Ba Duan Jin – 8 Pieces of Brocade method) to harmonise and promote free flow of Qi through the digestive system;

3. The use of the acupuncture point Zusanli (Stomach 36) and how you can apply pressure to this point. This acupressure point has many effects including:
– helping to improve all issues involving the Stomach and Spleen systems, e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, nausea, digestive discomfort and pain, indigestion;
tonifying (building up) deficient Qi and/or Blood so that you feel less exhausted;
tonifying Wei (Defensive) Qi so optimising the function of the immune system;
maintaining general health, especially in cases of weakness, low energy levels and chronic illness;
– helping to stabilise mental and emotional health in cases such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, PMS.
