Qigong For Bloating And Weight Loss – Introduction

Bloating and weight gain falls under the realm of the digestive system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). If the digestive function is strong then fuel in the form of food is efficiently converted to energy by our digestive system. If the digestive system is weak (lack of “digestive Fire”) then when we ingest food it is not efficiently converted to energy and can instead accumulate as fat or excess fluid in the body.

Causes of an under functioning digestive system include:

  • Stress
  • Eating when standing rather than sitting down to relax and eat a meal.
  • Overconsumption of raw, cold or processed food
  • Eating on the run/in front of the TV/when emotionally upset
  • Eating just before bedtime

The Qigong exercises in the video on this page will help to create the conditions for open and free flow of Qi throughout the digestive system, thereby providing it with sufficient “Fire” to process and extract nutrition from our food in the most efficient way.

NOTE: Qigong is not a “magic weight loss” bullet! However, it can be incorporated into any weight management plan in conjunction with advice from your TCM/acupuncture practitioner or Western medicine doctor.

Qigong For Bloating And Weight Loss – Method

  1. Standing Posture – variation of the Swimming Dragon Qigong exercise.
  2. Qigong deep abdominal breathing. Relax the abdominal area as you inhale to create more space for the digestive organs, allowing them to function efficiently.
  3. Qigong “Fanning the Fire” breathing (also known as the Bellows Breath or Bhastrika in yoga practice).
  4. After exercise a gentle walk or circular massage of the abdominal/stomach area will help to improve circulation of Qi in the area at the time digestion is taking place.

Lesson 59 – 15 Minute Qigong Routine For Beginners (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

In this Qigong video you can learn a simple 15 minute Qigong routine for beginners, taught by myself, Dr. Janice Tucker, the founder of the Space To Relax Programme of Qigong video lessons. These classes are free and everyone is welcome. However, if you’d like to contribute as a thank you for the class click here. 50% of donations will go to the ICU staff in my local hospital in Co. 15 Minute Qigong Routine For Beginners – Introduction

For those of you who are new to Qigong you may not know that this ancient practice is a combination of simple movements, breathing and mind focus to create the conditions whereby your Qi can flow more openly within your body and mind. When this happens your body begins to “regulate” itself and comes back into a healthy balance.

In this 15 minute Qigong routine for beginners, you will learn how to enjoy Qigong, not taking it too seriously, not striving for perfection (which creates stress!) and instead, enjoying the smooth and easy flow of your movement and breath.

The objective of this routine is to:

  • Energise your body;
  • Calm mind chatter;
  • Improve your sleep;
  • Aid weight loss.

The result of this practice is that you will feel both relaxed and invigorated at the same time. It is the perfect method to perform in the morning as a kick start to your day but can be practiced anytime.

15 Minute Qigong Routine For Beginners – Method

  1. Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Adopt the correct Qigong stance or sitting posture.
  3. Perform a few arm circles to circulate and encourage the Qi to move down into Dan Tian (in the lower abdomen) and your legs/feet.
  4. Repeat a few rounds of the upper back and shoulder stretch.
  5. Perform a variation of “Swimming Dragon” either from a sitting (arm and head movements only) or standing position (horse stance of regular Qigong stance).
  6. Shake out any remaining tension by vibrating the body for a minute or so.

Lesson 55 – Qigong Exercises For Thyroid Health and Metabolism (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

Lesson 55 – Qigong Exercises For Thyroid Health and Metabolism (Replay of Live Qigong Class)

This is a replay of a live session showing you some Qigong exercises for thyroid health and metabolism, taught by myself, Dr. Janice Tucker. I have been teaching Qigong for two decades and am the founder of the Space To Relax Programme of Qigong video lessons and a practitioner of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

You can join my live classes on Zoom every Thursday at 4 pm Irish time. Click here to join us (lesson replays sent out by email in case you can’t make it).

Qigong Exercises for Thyroid Health and Metabolism – Introduction

Our thyroid gland, located in the neck, secretes hormones responsible for the regulation of our metabolism and “rate of living”. There are two main types of hormone imbalance:

  1. Underactive thyroid, manifesting with symptoms such as feeling cold, dry skin and hair, puffy face, constipation, weight gain, sluggishness and depression
  2. Overactive thyroid, manifesting with symptoms such as feeling hot, high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, increased appetite but losing weight, diarrhea, anxiety and irritability.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) thyroid imbalance is indicative of an imbalance of Yin (the cooling, moistening and nourishing functions in the body) and Yang (the warming, moving and activating functions in the body). These two broad imbalances are:

  1. Underactive thyroid is related to Yang deficiency
  2. Overactive thyroid is related to Yin deficiency

Note: These are broad indications and should not be used in place of a full TCM diagnosis from a fully qualified TCM practitioner.

The Role of Exercise In Managing Thyroid Imbalance

Any exercise which increases stress levels and exhausts the muscles and tissues of the body (e.g. cardiovascular or intense exercise) will not be of benefit to you because an already exhausted system will struggle to recover.

Helpful exercises for thyroid regulation involve those which benefit tissue building and repair, breathing and lowering of stress levels such as Qigong because they do not overtax your system.

Qigong Exercises For Thyroid Health and Metabolism – Method

  1. Begin sitting or standing with a few abdominal breaths.
  2. For overactive thyroid use the method of exhaling through the feet to rid anything you don’t want in your body/mind and inhaling into Dan Tian (lower abdomen) to draw in clean, fresh Qi to calm the mind.
  3. For underactive thyroid use part of the “Swimming Dragon” method to gently circulate the Qi throughout the whole body without causing exhaustion.
  4. Conclude with a few abdominal breaths.

Qigong for Weight Loss

Qigong for Weight Loss

In our busy world we might often find it difficult to find the time to eat. However, statistics show that people in the Western world are increasingly getting bigger. Obesity is on the rise. In Ireland, where I live, the percentage of people who were classified as overweight or obese in 2015 was 60%. This has risen to 62% in 2017 (Central Statistics Office – “The Wellbeing of the Nation 2017“). We all know that the healthiest way to shed pounds is to combine healthy eating with exercise. Fad diets rarely work and the weight often piles back on again afterwards. In the video on this page I’ll be showing you how you can use Qigong for weight loss. I’ll give you a few tips to get you started and let you know how you can progress and take things further if you really want to explore how you can use Qigong for weight loss that lasts!

Janice Tucker is a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Qigong. She is also the founder of the Space To Relax online programme of Qigong video lessons.

Qigong for Weight Loss

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers an alternative method to help those who are trying to slim down. Qigong, as a branch of TCM focuses on bringing back balance to the body and treating the root cause of a problem by promoting the smooth flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body. Combining Qigong with other exercise and healthy eating can have tremendous results in your effort to lose weight.

Below are some of my recommendations of methods of Qigong for weight loss. There are lots more in the Space To Relax Online Programme but what is important is that you practice regularly, exercise regularly and eat healthily. CONSISTENCY is the key!

1. Develop a Morning Routine

This is the best way, I find, to be consistent. Set yourself up for the day with 5-10 minutes of Qigong. If you don’t have time, get up 10 minutes earlier! :-). Following along with my Qigong Morning Routine here.

2. Get Rid Of Toxic Build Up In Your Body

Often we put on weight because toxins accumulate in our bodies which make us feel sluggish and less likely to exercise. Before we know it our weight has increased. Also, excess weight can be a result of excess fluid accumulating in the body if the lymphatic system is not draining and moving fluids around in a healthy way. Below are two previous videos for you to watch if you want to use Qigong for weight loss:

To cleanse or detox your body use this Qigong cleansing method daily (click here to watch). It only takes 2 minutes to practice once you have memorised the movements.

To drain lymph watch my previous video on Qigong for Lymphatic Drainage.

3. Emotional Factors Affecting Weight Gain

As many of you may know emotions can play a significant role in weight gain because we can resort to “emotional eating” in response to stresses from family and work. The stress hormone cortisol can upset the body’s metabolism too, causing an increase in weight or failure to lose weight even when you are not overeating. Refer to my previous videos if you feel that emotional factors contribute to your situation.

Other Tips To Help You Lose Weight

  1. Acupuncture helps a person lose body fat by reducing appetite and thus reducing the calorie consumption by the body. On the other hand, it increases the metabolic rate of the body and aids in burning more calories. Acupuncture also stimulates the release of endorphins that help to reduce the body fat and insulin levels. Seek out a practitioner in your area if you need some help and don’t want to tackle losing weight on your own.
  1. Consult a Health Coach. If you want to find someone to help keep you motivated and on track the you may want to consider seeking out a health coach who can help you with dietary and exercise advice. They know all the pitfalls on your journey to slimming down and getting healthier so can help you to overcome them, should they arise. Take a look here for a good example from Dr Ailis Brosnan, who works here in Ireland and runs online programmes available to people worldwide.
