Qigong Healing Sound For Lungs & A Meditation For Grief – Introduction

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) autumn is the season associated with the Lungs. This is the season when our Lung Qi can be more challenged by coughs, colds and infections so it’s important to do what we can to optimise Lung health.

There are many Qigong methods that can help create the conditions for open and free-flowing Qi, blood and fluid through the Lungs in order to enhance their functions of healthy breathing, protection against infection, healthy skin and regulation of fluid metabolism.

The first method below shows you a simple “discharging” exercise to rid any waste of sick Qi in the Lungs which may be impeding free flow of Qi. The second is a lovely meditation to help you release grief and sadness (the associated emotions of the Lungs in TCM), resulting in a feeling of calmness and lightness in your body and mind.

Qigong Healing Sound For Lungs & A Meditation For Grief – Method

  1. Begin by sitting or standing and performing a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Use the “ssss” sound or the “Xia” sound to help discharge waste Qi from the Lungs. Repeat the movement and sound 6 times to each side, or for as long as it takes for you to feel a little freer in the lung area.
  3. Follow my voice for a guided meditation which will help you to process the feelings of sadness and grief.
  4. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Lesson 76 – Qigong For Chest Opening, Lung Cleansing & Immune Strength (Replay of Live Class)

Qigong For Chest Opening, Lung Cleansing & Immune Strength – Introduction

Chest tightness and congestion are common problems in our modern-day lifestyle which involves spending a significant amount of time in a hunched or slumped posture. Driving, working on screens and phone use all cause us to too easily adopt a posture that constricts the lungs and impairs efficient breathing. This can result in:

Physically: feeling short of breath, fatigued, having a weakened immune system (see below for explanation);

Mentally: feeling anxious, depressed, unmotivated, not focused, lacking in confidence and self-esteem.

Research has shown that developing an upright posture with an open chest area can help with:

Physically: less fatigue, easier breathing, increased resilience;

Mentally: more mental clarity, less anxiety and depression, more confidence and a better mood.

In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Lung system is responsible for breathing, water metabolism, associated with the emotions of sadness and grief and self-confidence/value of oneself. The Lung is also responsible for the strength of our defensive Qi (Wei Qi) so by creating the conditions for smooth and abundant flow of Qi to the Lungs, we can help to strengthen our immunity.

Qigong exercises combining simple movements with the breath and mind focus can help to:

  1. Open the chest area and improve breathing efficiency;
  2. Enhance immunity;
  3. Relieve fatigue;
  4. Improve mood.

In the video lesson on this page you can follow along with some simple beginner Qigong exercises to

  1. Cleanse the lungs of waste or stale air and open up the chest area.
  2. Encourage the flow of Qi through the Lung channel (from just under the collar bones on each side, down the arms to the tip of the thumbs).
  3. Strengthen the lungs so that you can increase the efficiency of your breathing.

Qigong For Chest Opening, Lung Cleansing & Immune Strength – Method

  1. Adopt a Qigong Standing Posture.

  2. Settle into your practice with a few Abdominal Breaths.

  3. Cleansing the Lungs:

    Place one hand on top of the other on your lower abdomen. Inhale through your nose. Exhale through your mouth, at the same time leaning foward and gently pressing the abdomen inwards towards your spine. Repeat 3 times.
    Inhale through the nose to fill your lungs as much as you can, at the same time leaning back slightly and extending your arms to the sides at shoulder level. Hold your breath for a short time. Exhale through your mouth as you come back to an upright position. Repeat 3 times.

    NOTE: TAKE CARE WITH FORWARD BENDING IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH BLOOD PRESSURE, OSTEOPOROSIS OR LOWER BACK PAIN.
    Relax and perform a few abdominal breaths.

  4. Encouraging Flow of Qi Through the Lung Channel

    Inhale and lift your arms up to shoulder level in front of you. Make loose fists then extend your index fingers and thumbs out from the fist. Press the heels of the hands away from you so that you feel a stretch along the inside of your forearms. Exhale, moving your arms out to the sides at shoulder level, keeping your index fingers pointing to upwards and focusing on pressing the heels of your hands away from you. Bring your mind to the lung chanel running from beneath the collar bones to your thumbs. Inhale back to your starting position. Repeat 3 times.

  5. Strengthen the Lungs:

    Adopt a comfortable seated position. Use your right index and middle finger to find your pulse on your left hand. Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Inhale and hold for 20 beats of your pulse (less if this is uncomfortable for you or you have any history of heart/cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or feel generally weak in any way). Exhale, at the same time, dropping your tongue away from the roof of your mouth and making the sound “Song”. Make this exhalation as long as possible. Repeat 3 times.

    Note: If you can’t hold your breath for long then instead focus on a long, slow exhalation.

Qigong Exercises For Lungs And Immunity – Introduction

I made this video in response to a request from one of my Qigong students who wanted some Qigong exercises to help her during her recovery from a lingering respiratory infection.

In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Lung system is associated with:

  • healthy and effortless breathing;
  • resistance to disease and a healthy immune system;
  • regulation of the function of skin (opening and closing of the pores);
  • the season of autumn;
  • the emotion of grief.

When Lung is not functioning in an optimal way the following symptoms may be observed as a result:

  • Breathing difficulties;
  • Asthma;
  • Poor resistance to disease; easily catching coughs, colds and infections;
  • Poor regulation of sweating;
  • Eczema and other skin conditions;
  • Prolonged sadness and grief.

The Qigong exercises in the video on this page will help you to create the optimum conditions of healthy Lung function. As a result you may feel more energised and “lighter” in both body and mind.

Qigong Exercises For Lungs and Immunity- Method

  1. Sitting or Standing Posture – you can practice this exercise either position.
  2. Tapping along the Lung channel.
  3. Open and close along the back of the body with arm movements.
  4. Arm extented to one side with heel of hand press. Right arm, then left arm, then both arms together. Exhale as you press the heel of the hand while also thinking of the the lung channel running from base of the collar bone down the arm and out of the end of the thumb.
  5. Shake out the hands.
  6. Qigong meditation. Use the Lung sound from the “Six Healing Sounds” method to discharge waste Qi from the Lung. Visualise the Lung; back and front, top and bottom. In your mind’s eye, fill the lungs with nourishing, energising Qi, filling them up from bottom to top.
  7. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Introduction To Qigong for Lymphatic Circulation

In this video you can follow along with some Qigong for lymphatic circulation and immunity enhancement. The function of the lymphatic system is to clear debris such as bacteria and viruses from your body. For this reason it is closely related to your immune system.

Symptoms of poor lymphatic drainage include cold hands and feet, fluid accumulation and a weakened immune system.

How We Can Use Qigong for Lymphatic Circulation

Qigong can help to enhance the flow of lymph and remove any areas of stagnation in three main ways:

1. Using Abdominal Breathing. Click here for more details;

2. Moving the body which can increase lymph circulation by up to 15%. You can do this by practising the Circles method, the tapping method which you can follow along with in the video, or any other physical movement;

3. Posture. Any inversion will work well in helping lymph flow. Simply lying down with your legs elevated on pillows or the “legs up the wall” yoga posture (as demonstrated in the video) will be very helpful.

For more information see my previous blog post on “Qigong for Lymphatic Drainage” here.

Integration into Your Day

You can perform Abdominal Breathing anytime you have the opportunity. Movements such as walking which is part of day to day life will help improve the circulation of your lymph. The tapping and legs up the wall exercises can be done in a matter of minutes so don’t take too much time. Having said that, there is nothing more relaxing for lying with your legs up the wall for 15-30 minutes if you have the time!

Qigong For Immunity – My Top 4 Tips

1. Abdominal Breathing

a) Inhalation. In order to enhance your immunity think of inhaling clean, fresh, energising air that will improve your lung function, opening up your respiratory channels so that you can increase your resistance to disease.
b) Exhalation. As you exhale think of anything you don’t want in your body, especially if you have an infection, e.g. phlegm, cough, sinus pressure. Breathe out, using your mind to expel what you don’t want.

For more detail on this method, please click here to view my previous video on “Get Rid of the Negative with Qigong Breathing Exercises”.

2. One of the Six Healing Sounds

This is a “discharging” method which means you can use it to rid any sick or waste Qi from your body. In this method you use a specific sound to rid sick Qi from the Lung system. The sound is “tssss” and it creates a specific frequency which resonates with your lung system. In this way you can help enhance your immunity.

a) Breathe into the lower belly (Dan Tian) for 3 breaths.
b) Think of the lungs for 3 breaths.
c) Exhale each time saying the “tssss” sound as you turn to the side looking over your shoulder. As you do this think of expelling waste or sick Qi from your lungs.

You can perform this method from a standing position or as you are walking.

3. Discharge With Vibration

This is a very quick and easy Qigong for immunity method in which you simply vibrate the body to expel any sick or waste Qi from your body. It is Lesson 3 in my free 3 part Space To Relax video series (see below for details on how to access this).

4. Get Advice From Your Practitioner or Local Health Store

The ideal time to book a course of treatment with your Chinese medicine practitioner or acupuncturist is before your immune system is challenged. Make use of your healthcare practitioner or consult with your local health store to get advice on the best immune boosting herbs and supplements.
