Lesson 86 – Qigong Healing Sound For Kidney Health

This video shows you a Qigong healing sound for kidney health and a short “inner smile” meditation to warm and energise the kidney and lower back area. This is a useful routine for winter, the season associated with our Kidney system in Chinese medicine, and the time of year to pay the most attention to protecting our Kidney system from cold.

This lesson was taught by myself, Dr. Janice Tucker, the founder of the Space To Relax Programme of Qigong video lessons.

Qigong Healing Sound For Kidney – Introduction

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the season associated with the Kidney system is Winter. This is the time when our Kidney system needs a little more attention, bolstering and protection because Kidney is easily damaged by cold.

Our Kidney system is responsible for:

  • Birth, growth, reproduction and sexuality;
  • Hair growth;
  • Fluid balance;
  • Opening and closing of the “Yin orifices” (urethra and anus);
  • Lower back, knees and teeth.

When our Kidney system is under pressure or deficient we may observe signs such as:

  • Premature birth, slow growth in children, loss of libido, fertility issues;
  • Premature baldness or thinning hair;
  • Water retention, especially from the waist down;
  • Incontinence;
  • Pain, aches, weakness or stiffness in the lower back and/or knees;
  • Problems with teeth.

In addition to Kidney being susceptible to cold, this system is also easily damaged by the emotions of fear and shock. Its associated taste is salty so a Kidney deficient person may crave salty foods.

The Qigong routine in the video on this page shows you a simple Qigong healing sound for Kidney which helps to rid or “discharge” any sick or waste Qi from the organ system. The second part of the routine is a lovely meditation for the Kidney for you to follow along with.

Qigong Healing Sound For Kidney – Method

  1. Begin by standing and performing a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
  2. Use the movements, breath and mind along with the healing sound for Kidney which is “Chui” (pronounced “Chway”). Repeat six times to each side then rest your arms by your sides and observe your body and breathing. Repeat as many times as you wish. Because this is a discharging method then it is best to practice outside or near an open window (but not in a draught) so that the sick Qi dissipates into the atmosphere and does not remain in your living space.
  3. Follow along with my voice for the simple Qigong meditation for Kidney.
  4. Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Qigong Video Interview-“Create More Energy In Your Life”

This is a replay of a Qigong podcast interview “Create More Energy In Your Life” conducted by my Chinese medicine practitioner colleague, Lucy Townsley, who started her own podcast on women’s health in January 2022. She has interviewed a number of fascinating, knowledgable experts about many health matters affecting women and I was fortunate enough to be invited to speak on her podcast.

In this Qigong video interview I emphasise my passion and belief in equipping my clients and Qigong students with tools which they can use to manage their health for themselves. These “Qigong tools” encourage you to take responsibility for your own health, giving you confidence and empowering you so that you no longer feel helpless when it comes to your state of health.

Main Points

In the podcast I explain to you how to:

Qi Gong is a different type of exercise where you don’t force your body to move. You use your breath and mind to lead the body’s movement. This can be helpful if you suffer from pain.

Breathing is a huge part of Qigong. When you breathe in deeply and feel the belly expand out. The diaphragm will then move in different directions, sideways, forwards, backward, up, and down. The benefits of breathing are huge… Breathing brings energy to your body called Qi in Chinese Medicine. Breathing in and out of the nose helps calm the mind and helps with anxiety.

Do you have a place in your body that is painful? If so, I explain how breathing into the area can help ease your pain.

In this podcast, it’s made very clear that anyone can learn how to turn their health around. You can be in control of your life. Once you start on this journey it helps ease any worry of future health concerns.

The most important takeaway for you from my Qigong video interview is to understand that change can happen by allowing rather than forcing things unnaturally. Many Qigong students put in too much effort rather than simply enjoying and observing their practice. 😊

Qigong Winter Routine – Introduction

This is Part 2, showing you a second Qigong winter routine. The exercises in this video are focusing on conserving energy and nourishing Qi, appropriate methods for the winter and preparation for the springtime.

The methods you’ll learn here focus are more meditative and less physical, in accordance with the slower pace of winter.

If you live in the southern hemisphere and it is summer right now, you can still use this routine for anytime you feel exhausted, lethargic and as though you need a little nurturing and self-care in order to recharge your batteries.

Qigong Winter Routine – Method

  1. Begin by adopting the correct Qigong sitting or standing posture and performing a few abdominal breaths (see more here).
  2. Use one of the Six Healing Sounds, the sound of the kidney, to help rid waste or turbid Qi from the Kidney system before moving on to nourish and bring more Qi into the body.
  3. Perform the “Supporting Heaven” method to stretch the whole body and help create the conditions by which the Qi can flow more freely, especially along the sides of the body and arms. This is the first movement in the “Eight Pieces of Brocade” Qigong sequence, a famous set of exercises which I teach in my Space To Relax Qigong Programme.
  4. You can lie down for the next method and listen to my voice for the meditation “Relax, Expand and Nourish The Heart” which is also available as a free audio meditation download called “Calm Your Busy Mind In 8 Minutes“.
  5. Finish your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Full Moon Qigong Routine – Introduction

The Qi of the moon is particularly strong around full moon time. The moon can provide us with Qi which is more Yin in nature. The Yin functions of the body include cooling, moistening and nourishing so when we absorb Yin Moon Qi it using specific Qigong methods it can help us to balance these functions. This can be especially useful for you if your Yin is deficient (indicated by such symptoms as red eyes, dry skin and hair, constipation, restless sleep and anxiety).

The Qigong in this video can be used for:

1. If you suspect you are Yin deficient (although it’s always best to seek a diagnosis from a qualified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine rather than attempting to diagnose yourself).

2. Feelings of tiredness and lethargy. It can be used in conjunction with last week’s Lesson 44 “Winter Qigong Routine

Full Moon Qigong Routine – Method

  1. Begin by adopting the correct Qigong sitting or standing posture and performing a few abdominal breaths (see more here).
  2. Follow along with the “Turn To Look At The Moon” movement.
  3. Adopt the “Stand Like A Tree” posture and meditate on holding the moon between your hands.
  4. Finish your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

Qigong Winter Routine – Introduction

This class was inspired by a couple of my Space To Relax members who told me that they were finding it difficult to get back into the swing of their Qigong practice in the New Year.

This video shows you an example of a winter Qigong practice. In winter we focus, as does the natural world, on conserving energy, nourishing our Qi, and storing up our reserves in preparation for the more active months of spring and summer.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the system associated with the season of the winter is the Kidney. The Kidney is also related to the emotion of fear so on a mental and emotional level this practice can help you transform fear into tranquility and confidence in your own ability.

The methods you’ll learn here focus on nourishing the kidney system and are more meditative and less physical, in accordance with the slower pace of winter.

If you live in the southern hemisphere or near the equator, you can still use this routine anytime you might feel fatigued and need some restoration on a physical and mental level.

Qigong Winter Routine – Method

  1. Begin by adopting the correct Qigong sitting or standing posture and performing a few abdominal breaths (see more here).
  2. Use one of the Six Healing Sounds, the sound of the kidney, to help rid waste or turbid Qi from the Kidney system before moving on to nourish and bring more Qi into the body.
  3. Perform the Kidney massage to invigorate and bring more Qi into the Kidney and lower back.
  4. Use a gentle circling movement to encourage Qi from the natural world into Dan Tian in the lower abdomen.
  5. Finish your practice with a few abdominal breaths.
