Qigong For Bloating And Weight Loss – Introduction
Bloating and weight gain falls under the realm of the digestive system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). If the digestive function is strong then fuel in the form of food is efficiently converted to energy by our digestive system. If the digestive system is weak (lack of “digestive Fire”) then when we ingest food it is not efficiently converted to energy and can instead accumulate as fat or excess fluid in the body.
Causes of an under functioning digestive system include:
Stress
Eating when standing rather than sitting down to relax and eat a meal.
Overconsumption of raw, cold or processed food
Eating on the run/in front of the TV/when emotionally upset
Eating just before bedtime
The Qigong exercises in the video on this page will help to create the conditions for open and free flow of Qi throughout the digestive system, thereby providing it with sufficient “Fire” to process and extract nutrition from our food in the most efficient way.
NOTE: Qigong is not a “magic weight loss” bullet! However, it can be incorporated into any weight management plan in conjunction with advice from your TCM/acupuncture practitioner or Western medicine doctor.
Qigong For Bloating And Weight Loss – Method
Standing Posture – variation of the Swimming Dragon Qigong exercise.
Qigong deep abdominal breathing. Relax the abdominal area as you inhale to create more space for the digestive organs, allowing them to function efficiently.
Qigong “Fanning the Fire” breathing (also known as the Bellows Breath or Bhastrika in yoga practice).
After exercise a gentle walk or circular massage of the abdominal/stomach area will help to improve circulation of Qi in the area at the time digestion is taking place.

Qigong Exercises For Spleen And Stomach – Introduction
I made this video in response to a request from one of my Qigong students. She wanted to learn some Qigong in order to help relieve feelings of “falling down” in the lower abdominal area, heaviness and dragginess.
In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) some of the functions of the Spleen system include:
Governing the whole of digestion and the other organs involved in this process
Keeping things in their proper place; blood in the blood vessels, internal organs where they should be, developing babies in the uterus.
Circulating Qi (and warmth) to the extremities of the body (hands and feet).
When Spleen is not functioning in an optimal way the following symptoms may be observed as a result:
Easy bruising;
Prolapse of, for example, bladder and uterus;
Hernia;
Miscarriage
Digestive issues;
Cold hands and feet.
The Qigong exercises in the video on this page will help you with draggy, heavy and bloated feelings in the abdomen. As a result, they will help give you a lift, both physically and mentally.
Qigong Exercises For Spleen And Stomach – Method
Sitting or Standing Posture – you can practice this exercise either position.
Raising Up A Single Hand – one of the Eight Pieces of Brocade Qigong exercise to help create the conditions for open and free flow of Qi through the Spleen and Stomach organs resulting in a healthier digestive organs.
Qigong Meditation – use the breath and mind to ground yourself as you exhale and lift up internal abdominal organs as you inhale.
Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.

15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Introduction
In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the small intestine system is paired with the heart system and related to the season of summer. This is the time when these systems are the most active and require the most care.
On the physical and mental/emotional level, the small intestine sorts pure from impure and clear from turbid. This means that our small intestine extracts nutrients from food and allows waste material to pass into the large intestine to be expelled from the body. Very interestingly, on a mental level, the small intestine allows us to clearly discern, make choices and decisions. It allows us to discriminate between clear and turbid thoughts, distinguish right from wrong and make clear judgements.
A healthy small intestine system manifests as healthy digestion, judgement and decision making. However, in our modern-day world full of too much information, the small intestine system can easily become overwhelmed leading to digestive/immunity problems and a confused/indecisive/foggy mind.
A balanced diet and lifestyle (sleep, exercise, meditation) will promote a healthy small intestine system, as will some Qigong practice! In this video, we use two specific exercises to help create the ideal conditions for open and smooth flow of Qi through the small intestine channel which leads internally to the heart and the small intestine. The result, with regular practice, is that we will become better able to separate pure from impure on both a physical (digestive) and mental (thoughts) level.
15 Minute Qigong For Small Intestine – Method
Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.

Qigong For Constipation – Introduction
Most of us will, at one time or another, have suffered with constipation, bloating or digestive discomfort. Constipation can be due to many factors including:
Certain foods;
Medications;
Stress;
Rushing and feeling under pressure;
Lack of exercise;
Eating on the run.
The objective of using Qigong for constipation is to:
Stimulate peristalsis and contraction in the intestines so that waste can be efficiently expelled;
Create the conditions for smooth and unobstructed Qi flow in the organ systems which, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), are involved in healthy digestive function. These are Spleen, Liver, Stomach, Small Intestine and Large Intestine.
Use one of the methods below or a combination to either improve your situation if you are suffering from constipation or to maintain healthy bowel movements and prevent constipation from arising in the first place.
Qigong For Constipation – Method
Begin standing (or standing for long periods is not available to you right now).
Settle into your practice with a few abdominal breaths to bring yourself into the Qigong state.
Massage the abdominal area, focusing on the descending colon on the left side of the abdomen.
Use exaggerated abdominal breathing to massage the abdominal organs and encourage movement through the intestines.
Close your hands to make fists, creating tension as you inhale and draw up on the anus. As you exhale, release the fists and relax the anus. Repeat 20 times.
Perform the “Knocking on the Gates of Life” exercise.
Perform “Raising Up A Single Hand” exercise to promote Qi flow through the sides of the body and channels linked to the digestive organs mentioned above.
Consolidate your practice with a few abdominal breaths.
Additional Management Options
The following additional tips are worth considering in order to help best manage constipation:
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be extremely helpful.
Drink plenty of water.
Eat a diet high in fibre.
Take calcium/magnesium supplements to help promote muscle contraction and relaxation (and improve peristalsis).
Pay attention to your time and manner of eating. Eat regularly. Chew your food slowly. Avoid eating “on the run”, standing up, in front of the TV, when you are emotionally upset, when you are rushing or under pressure.

Qigong For Digestion – Introduction
In this video you can follow along with some Qigong for digestion. This Qigong exercise can help you if you suffer with digestive issues such as colitis, diverticulitis, IBS (see here for a previous video about IBS) and indigestion, amongst other stomach and digestive related problems. Because it communicates with all the other systems in our bodies, when our gut is healthy the rest of our body is more likely to function at its optimum. The sequence is as follows:
1. Begin with Abdominal Breathing to calm the mind and prepare yourself for your practice;
2. Raising Up A Single Hand exercise (which is part of the Ba Duan Jin – 8 Pieces of Brocade method) to harmonise and promote free flow of Qi through the digestive system;
3. The use of the acupuncture point Zusanli (Stomach 36) and how you can apply pressure to this point. This acupressure point has many effects including: – helping to improve all issues involving the Stomach and Spleen systems, e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, nausea, digestive discomfort and pain, indigestion; – tonifying (building up) deficient Qi and/or Blood so that you feel less exhausted; – tonifying Wei (Defensive) Qi so optimising the function of the immune system; – maintaining general health, especially in cases of weakness, low energy levels and chronic illness; – helping to stabilise mental and emotional health in cases such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, PMS.
